The Research Ethics Portal has a number of functions that are invaluable to researchers, students, REB members and coordinators.

The following indicates some of the functions that the research ethics portal offers:

  • Institutional Research Ethics Education Database
    • The portal includes a database that includes educational materials related to research ethics from each of the TAHSN institutions and the University of Toronto. These documents include presentations, policies and guidelines, forms, applications, and templates, all of which are used by their corresponding institutions in research ethics education.
    • All of these documents are categorized by the institution that developed them and are available for download from the portal or have been linked to where the materials are hosted on the individual institution’s website. The materials can be browsed or searched for according to the topic/theme of the document (consent, adverse events, etc.), the date it was uploaded, and by the type of the document (presentation, guideline, etc.).
    • The institutional pages also include contact information for the institution and its REB office, as well as a list of past and future events related to research ethics that are being hosted by the institution where applicable.
  • Database 'Browse by Topic'
    • Browse by topic is a function of the portal that allows users to browse the research ethics education database for materials that pertain to a specific topic of the user’s choice. When visiting this section of the portal, the user is presented with a list of topics (consent, adverse events, privacy/confidentiality, etc.), that if selected, will populate a list comprised of the related documents from all TAHSN institutions. These documents can then be downloaded in order to review fellow institution’s practices for education and procedures pertaining to a specific topic. This ‘browse by topic’ function is also available as a drop-down menu on the top menu of the portal.
  • Database 'Browse by Type'
    • When selecting this section of the portal from the left-justified menu, the user is able to browse the research ethics education database based on the type of document the user desires to view. These formats include presentations, policies and guidelines, forms and applications, templates, and miscellaneous documents.
  • Research Ethics General Resources
    • This section of the portal is home to resources related to research ethics education that are more general in nature and are not just used within the TAHSN institutions. These resources include documents (Tri-Council Policy Statement, Declaration of Helsinki, etc.) that are downloadable or linked to the original website where they are hosted, general links that redirect the user to websites of interest in the field of research ethics, and research ethics events that are being hosted that are not TAHSN institution-specific.

Users of the portal are able at any time to browse or search through all of the resources compiled throughout each section of the website. For example, if a user is interested in informed consent in research, she can browse by topic and view each document related to consent that are used by the TAHSN institutions, or she can alternatively visit a particular institution to browse or search through their documents for consent documents, or finally the user can search through all documents and events through a simple search function displayed at the top of the page. Depending on the focus and motivation of the user, there are several user-friendly methods of retrieving the desired research ethics resources.
